Unveiling “The Relationships We Carry” Mural by artist Mike Cywink in the Hutt Building, University of Guelph

Summary

As part of the IndigenERA Lab launch on Friday, March 21, 2025, two murals titled "The Relationships We Carry" by artist Mike Cywink were unveiled in the Hutt Building at the University of Guelph. Mike held visioning sessions with the IndigenERA Lab and the Geography Department to understand the research conducted within our space and the wider values of the lab, inspiring the artwork.

After visioning sessions with the IndigenERA Lab and staff, faculty, and students from the University of Guelph Geography Department, Mike Cywink (@thunderdayvisions), an Ojibway artist from Whitefish River First Nation, brought our vision together in a three-part mural titled “The Relationships We Carry.”

Reflecting our commitment to relationality, doing work in a good way, capacity building, and honouring our responsibilities to one another and to Mother Earth, the piece is a beautiful reminder of the how we relate to the world around us. It empowers us to move forward in strength, joy, and commitment to our work in Indigenous environmental health and beyond.

This initiative was funded through the University of Guelph’s EDI Enhancement Fund (Office of Diversity and Human Rights (DHR)) and the Wellness@Work Grant Program.
